The Time has Arrived: Revolutionary War starts This Week!

Well, 'Hello' everyone. I hope you had a suitably enjoyable Christmas and New Year break. I have been giving myself a little time away from the internet during December. Recharging for all that 2014 has to offer.

And boy, DOES it offer!

This week brings us the start of the Marvel UK mini event 'Revolutionary War'. Marvel UK stalwarts Andy Lanning and Alan Cowsill are bringing back the largely forgotten characters of the Marvel UK 90s imprint, for a multipart story played out over three months.

This all begins this coming Wednesday (8th January, 2014), with Revolutionary War: Alpha, by Lanning and Cowsill, with art by Richard Elson.

The solicit for the issue itself reads as follows:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR: ALPHA #1
ANDY LANNING AND ALAN COWSILL (W) • RICH ELSON (A)
Cover by MARK BROOKS
Variant Cover by BARRY KITSON
Part 1 of “Revolutionary War”
• Marvel UK’s greatest heroes come together for the first time in 20 years to face a threat that could destroy the world.
• Featuring Captain Britain, Pete Wisdom, Death’s Head II, Motormouth and Killpower, the Warheads and a host of British heroes.
32 PGS./ ONE-SHOT/Rated T+ …$3.99

I cannot overemphasize both how excited I am about this and just how important this issue is to all fans of Marvel UK. Marvel probably doesn't have huge expectations for this series, so please join in me in surprising them by exceeding those expectations in a definite way.

Ask your comic store to put a copy aside for you, do not miss this issue. That's the cover you are looking for, or this Barry Kitson variant:

And for those who are curious a 4 Page Preview is now up over at Comic Book Resources.

Want more? Well, now we have a much clearer picture of what is coming via Marvel's own solicitations and via Alan Cowsill himself over on the Make Mine Marvel UK Facebook page.

So, Revolutionary War: Alpha is effectively Chapter 1 of this story. Here is how the rest of Revolutionary War will break down.

And there you have it. A list of issues, dates, variant covers and creators. And with this again may I reiterate what is fast becoming somewhat of a mantra for me, right now. Make sure you Order (or Pre-order) your copy.

I'm sure that most of you, much like myself, are eager to read these books. They're kind of a big deal to us, we want to read more Marvel UK character stories, and we know that the only way that is going to happen is if this series succeeds. The best way to ensure that is for you to go to your local comic book store, speak to the guy who orders them in, and ask them to pre-order you a copy of each book. You have the issue names. You have the dates they come out. They can do this for you.

Why? Well, it's no secret that the characters involved here are not as high profile as, say, the Spider-man, Avengers or Wolverines of this world. Those Mark Brooks covers are gobsmacking. Really standout covers. But the Marvel UK characters have been away for a while, and some store owners out there might not even be completely aware of Revolutionary War as a series or event.

So go and spread the word to them. :)

Pre-ordering the book, asking the owner to put an issue aside, guarantees that you'll get your copy, but it also lets the owner know that people are interested in the series. So hopefully they'll order enough copies in for others too.

If championing Marvel UK appearances over recent years (Such as Captain Britain & MI13, for example) has taught me anything it's that there's nothing more frustrating than wanting to support a series only to find that you cannot get hold of a copy - either because the store owner didn't order enough copies in, or didn't order it in at all. I've received a number of emails over the years from guys telling me just that. So let's make sure this does not happen this around.

Avoid disappointment, get your Revolutionary War order in today, and pick up Revolutionary War: Alpha this Wednesday. I have a really good feeling about this.

Speak soon.

Revolutionary War: Omega cover Revealed

So, over at this week's Axel-In-Charge column for Comic Book Resources they've mostly been talking about the fallout from Marvel's 'Infinity' event. Oddly, though, it's not an image from Infinity that's being used as a Header for the column, or the image being used by CBR on their front page.

No, that'd be an image from the cover of a very different book altogether.

Linked to the following question:

CBR: On a different front, Derek Metaltron had two questions, starting with, "As an Englishman I'm really happy to see the Marvel UK characters get a spotlight in the Revolutionary War one-shots, especially Captain Britain! I was wondering whether there are any plans after this for Brian Braddock and company? I would love to see some more of MI-13 or an Excalibur reunion."

Alonso: Let's get through "Revolutionary War" first and see if there's even a Britain to be Captain of…But here's a look at the cover to "Revolutionary War: Omega" for a bit of a clue.

And here is that cover:

Again with Mark Brooks on art duties.

A great picture image of Captain Britain, Dark Angel and Death's Head II.

I guess we'll have to wait and see to find out if Britain survives... But it's great to have an image like that dominate (despite really being a footnote) a whole larger article on something else.

The Revolution is Coming.

Second month of Revolutionary War titles revealed with Marvel's February Solicits.

I had intended to post these up on Friday. But we've been away over the weekend, so you're getting them now... ;)

So, Marvel's February 2014 solicits are out, and this means that two more Revolutionary War one-shots have had covers and issue information revealed.

First up:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR: DEATH'S HEAD II #1
ANDY LANNING & ALAN COWSILL (W) • NICK ROCHE (A)
Cover by MARK BROOKS
Variant Cover by Liam Sharp
Part 4 of "Revolutionary War"
• The long-awaited return of DEATH'S HEAD -- one of the biggest hits of the original Marvel UK!
• Death's Head! Death's Head II! On an adventure together for the first time EVER!
• What threat could be grave enough to bring these two heroes together from across time? How about the villainous Mys-Tech organization resurfacing with an army?!
32 PGS./ONE-SHOT/Rated T+ ...$3.99

And another great Mark Brooks cover, there. I've mentioned before that THREE versions of Death's Head have been active in Marvel, recently. The version in Kieron Gillen's Iron Man series had recently gone MIA. But that still leaves TWO.

1) Death's Head II, last seen in the pages of Captain Britain & MI13.

and

2) A version of Death's Head I, stranded in the present in an issue of Avenging Spider-man.

Looking at the character designs shown on that cover I'd say there's a fair chance that's what we might be looking at here. Two versions of the same character from different points in their own personal timeline. Why hasn't somebody done this before?

And yes. MYS-TECH. Could they be Revolutionary War's Big Bad? We'll have to wait and see...

Secondly we have:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR: SUPERSOLDIERS #1
ROB WILLIAMS (W) • BRENT ANDERSON (A)
Cover by MARK BROOKS
Variant Cover by TBD
Part 5 of "Revolutionary War"
• Some of the most popular heroes of Marvel UK return for SUPERSOLDIERS – and where the Supersoldiers go, trouble isn't far behind!
• It's the Supersoldiers versus Mys-Tech in all-out war!
• When a vast army of Mys-Tech Psycho Wraiths come calling on a small Scottish town, it's up to the Supersoldiers to put them down for good!
32 PGS./ ONE-SHOT/Rated T+ ...$3.99

That's right. Super Soldiers.

It's been a while, but from memory I'm assuming that's Invincible (Joseph Hauer), the most focussed on Soldier front and centre. The big guy behind him is, without question, Gog (Owen Llewelyn) the highly modified Welsh guy with bionic eyes.

The other two? I'm figuring the red-headed guy on the left is Govnor (Andy Black) the little guy who could absorb kinetic energy and convert it into strength. The guy with the bandana? I'm not so sure. It might be Dalton. I guess we'll have to wait and see... :)

And yes. Psycho Wraiths. Remember them? A little MYS-TECH side project based out of an undisclosed part of the Scottish highlands, which were once activated by the board members to take down Dark Angel. I wonder whether there's been a few more of them sitting unactivated all these years? Just sitting in wait?

So yes, that's what we have coming up in February. Notice also, that when compared next to the 3 covers from January's solicits there is a clear sense of progression going on on the covers themselves, as the event progresses. Check out the flames on the Union Flag at the bottom of each issue's cover.  Absent in the Revolutionary War Alpha cover, creeping in on the base of the Dark Angel and Knights of Pendragon issues, and then far more prominent on both of these new issues. A nice touch.

You'll also notice that if you look back up to the Death's Head II one-shot above you'll see that DH2 co-creator Liam Sharp will be doing a variant cover for this one. The finished article is still under wraps, however Liam Sharp has put up a rough sketch of what we presume is that cover on his Facebook page.

Even as a rough sketch you've got to admit that looks pretty damn good. I cannot wait to see the finished article.

So there ya go, to more officially solicited issues. And as I've said before if you want to read them, go to your local comic book store and ask them to pit a copy by for you. By pre-ordering you'll make sure you get the book you want and you'll also let the store owner know that people are interested in the series.

You can't really go wrong with that.

First confirmed artist for Marvel UK revival 'Revolutionary War' - It's Nick Roche on Death's Head II.

Long time followers of my Twitter feed might remember a Death's Head image I retweeted back in February by Transformers an Doctor Who artist Nick Roche. This one in fact.

Complete with a bit of a cheeky plea to Marvel. I retweeted it purely because I loved the image - Classic Death's Head seemingly taking down Machine Man and The Vision. Nice work.

And I didn't think any more of it than that...

More fool me, perhaps. :)

This weekend was the Dublin International Comics Expo (D.I.C.E.), at which there was an official Marvel panel headed by Marvel Exec C.B. Cebulski. Bleeding Cool are reporting that at that panel Cebulski made the announcement that Nick Roche will be pencilling an Andy Lanning written Death's Head II one-shot as part of the Revolutionary War series which starts this January.

So far we are to understand that Revolutionary War's format will be two bookend titles for the event, followed up by a series of individual one-shots dedicated to each property. But so far we had no finite information on who would be responsible for those.

Well, I guess this is the first confirmed one-shot - Death's Head II by Lanning and Roche.

Roche is best known for his IDW work on Doctor Who and Transformers. And if that image is anything to go by this could be very interesting indeed.

First glimpse of Marvel UK's return in Revolutionary War.

So, as most of you are probably aware by now, the many properties of Marvel UK are going to be making a US market comeback this coming January, in a series named 'Revolutionary War' to be written by Andy Lanning and Alan Cowsill.

If not? Well, now you do.

We'd heard a little about what it might entail, and that a number of artists would be attached to the series, but so far we'd not actually *seen* anything from it. Well, it is only September.

But last night Stephen Wacker, Marvel editor and editor for the series, posted the following little glimpse on Twitter...

Bless you, Mr Wacker. And yes, it really IS happening. It certainly looks like prospective cover art, and while I cannot say for certain who is responsible for it the art style certainly looks like it might be by Mark Brooks.

Let's have closer look shall we...

Well, I think we can certainly say, with little question, that we're looking at Death's Head II (Minion), in the centre there. And to the right of him are the unmistakable 'Hot-Knives' of Pete Wisdom.

I feel pretty sure that bottom left is Dark Angel's mask and hair. But what else?

Somebody in armour top left? Knights of Pendragon? Who does that purple fabric belong to?

May the speculation commence!

Either way it's a really nice image. And if this is the kind of production values we might be looking at for Revolutionary War I really hope it grabs people's attention.

Let me know what you think, guys. I'm really psyched for this series. Spread the word.

Sunday, 21 July 2013

So I go away for the weekend and Marvel announces the biggest Marvel UK news in years.

Well... this was rather stupendously badly timed on my part.

For those unaware this past week into weekend was the annual San Diego Comic-Con, probably the biggest annual even in American comics. Certainly the place for comics publishers to make their big announcements.

The cynic in me, of course, kind of assumed that in a year where Captain Britain had received a pretty unwarranted character assassination in Uncanny X-Force and Secret Avengers and Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy pretty much pretended Britain didn't even have any heroes of its own the likelihood of any Marvel announcement which would favour Marvel UK in any fashion coming out of San Diego was practically zero.

Well... looks like I was wrong. :)

From the panels on Friday this little image started popping up:

For the uninitiated, it's a play on the WW2 public information poster 'Keep Calm and Carry On' , which was produced by the British government to be used in the event of a major wartime disaster or in the event of invasion.

Only in place of The Crown we have Death's Head II. :) - And I really hope Liam Sharp has seen this.

It's a promotional image for a new limited series, starting in January 2014, in which Marvel UK stalwarts Andy Lanning and Alan Cowsill will be revisiting the many characters of Marvel UK, in most cases for the first time properly since the offices closed their doors back in 1995.

Andy Lanning has done a press piece about it for Marvel.com in which he speaks very kindly of Marvel UK, and reminds us of just how many impressive creators were involved with the imprint. And while the details of what the story will actually involve are still very limited at this stage there's plenty positives for long term fans of the imprint to take away from this. Such as:

In preparing to take on the revitalization of the UK imprint, Lanning found himself startled by how strong its world still reads today.

“The biggest surprise has been rereading the old issues and rediscovering how cool the characters and their stories were,” he confesses. “Many of the stories revolved around the evil machinations of a shadowy organization called Mys-Tech, which was formed of 7 ‘techno-wizards’ who, in 987, sold their souls to Mephisto in exchange for immortality.

“As part of their pact the board must supply a steady stream of souls to the demon or else forfeit their own. Many of the stories and characters were linked to Mys-Tech’s efforts of finding a way to escape their compact with Mephisto and becoming immortal in their own right and the machinations and the numerous nefarious plots that they hatched to do this.”

So I would imagine that Algernon Crowe, Wychwood, Tyburn and the other board members will be involved. Mephisto's become very involved with Marvel's universe in the past couple of years, too. In New Mutants, Journey into Mystery, X-Factor and other titles. A good time to have such connections.

Inspired by this trip down memory lane, Lanning and Cowsill have committed to a story big enough to honor the line’s sizable legacy.

“We want to have as many cameos and appearances as we can cram in so expect many ‘Easter Eggs’ cropping up as we return to several of the old haunts from the Marvel UK universe: The Museum of Antiquities, MI-13, Darkmoor and a few more,” Lanning reveals.

Which pretty much ticks all of my own personal boxes. Darkmoor in particular, naturally. But specific characters?

“I think it’s safe to say that Captain Britain and Pete Wisdom will be involved. It would be sacrilege not to feature them in a story set in the UK...."

Are you listening Mr Bendis...? ;)

"...Fans of heroes like Warheads, Knights of Pendragon, Death’s Head, Warheads, Dark Angel, Super Soldiers, Motormouth and Killpower will be pleased. We will strive to fit as many in as possible so keep your eyes peeled as your own old favorite may very well make an appearance!”

My highlighting there.

That's a pretty impressive list of characters. Heck, I'd pretty much written off seeing Tigon Liger's Warheads ever again, yet they got mentioned twice.

Both Lanning and Cowsill have a history with Marvel UK. I have a huge amount of belief in their handling of this project. The Beat are reporting that Revolutionary War will have a number of artists working on it, most likely a different artist each issue. No confirmation as to who, yet. But I'd love to see some of the old familiar faces getting involved.

Spotted this tweet to the Marvel Twitter account last night:

And such a great creation too. I would love to see Erskine return. By no means a guarantee, sure, but I'd love to see it happen.

I'm sure we'll get more info as we get closer to release, but even as a concept this is so much more than I could have hoped for. And definitely something I shall keep posting about as more news comes in.

Maybe I ought to go away for the weekend more often, eh?

Captain Britain/Avengers Update and more Marvel UK Cameos...

So... As a Comics Reader of over a quarter of a Century (Man, has it really been that long?) I have learnt long ago to know the difference between the 'Hope' for a storyline (based on logical plausibility, and other stories in other titles) and what we actually receive in print.

Back when Captain Britain accepted Avengers membership in Age of Heroes #1, this just so happened to coincide with a story in the new 'Avengers #1' relaunch, which was based very much on the need for a character to be brought in with an intimate knowledge of Time Travel, Inter-dimensional Travel, and the technology required to achieve either or both. I speculated in a blog post back in May over the logical inclusion of the newly invited Captain Britain being that final Avengers member. A logical inclusion because Captain Britain is probably the most expert individual in the Marvel Universe in each of these fields...

But, as all us long term readers of comics genre know, you don't always get what you want...

When Avengers #2 went on sale a couple of weeks back it turned out that the final member, the guy who the Avengers decided to go to, was in fact Noh-Var. Better know to many as Marvel Boy...

To be fair, some of you probably don't know who he is (He is a little obscure). So for the unaware amongst you, read up Here.

Put basically he's an alien warrior from another dimension, who got marooned in the Marvel Universe, in a limited series written by Grant Morrison in 2000. He was also, briefly, a Dark Avenger.

So yes, he does come from another dimension, and his long dead crew did once have the technology required to jump dimensions. The slight flaw in his inclusion in this story, however, is that the entire point of Noh-Var is that he is trapped in the Marvel Universe. He doesn't have the technology (or knowledge of it) required to jump dimensions. Otherwise he would have gone home, back to his native dimension.

He hasn't done this to date. Because he can't.

So a slight flaw in this story, that all of a sudden he is able to offer both tech and knowledge to the Avengers, at a moment's notice. Don't you think?

Anyway, a few people have mailed me about this. And I'm not really that narked. Slightly disappointed, in as much as this was the perfect story for Captain Britain to make his Avengers début. But I am actually a bit of a Noh-Var fan. So seeing him as an Avenger is still kinda cool. If a little bit nonsensical, sure. But I'll try to overlook that.

And the blow was somewhat softened, also, by another Marvel UK cameo in that very same issue.

Basically, and I think we're past Spoiler territory by now, in Avengers #2 Noh-Var constructs a machine which allows the Avengers to take a glimpse into the Futures. That's right. Futures. Plural. Because at this point in time things could go a number of different ways. No one path is the certain future.

But what was really great was to see so many possible future timelines from Marvel's back catalogue, all on  show in the same place. Not forgotten.

In amongst there I can see Marvel 2099, the MC2 universe from the late 90s, the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Days of Future Past and The Age of Apocalypse from the X-Men franchise, and several more too.

But perhaps the one figure to interest me the most is there on the right hand page.

Spotted him yet?

Hello, Minion!

That's right, none other than Death's Head II. An unexpected, and pleasant surprise.

After all, the timeline in which he was created (and absorbed the original Death's Head) has not exactly come to pass yet. We've seen hints threaded in Abnett and Lanning's Nova, in more recent times, but still...

Good to see that he is at least on the Radar. Be that Bendis' or JR Jr's.

For those more pedantic amongst you, of course, you may recall that this is NOT the first time John Romita Jr has drawn Death's Head II. Where was that, you may ask? Well, on none other than the cover for Marvel UK's Black Axe #1, which has formally been a Cover of the Week on this very site.

Not bad, eh?

Of course there's no guarantee that this means we'll see more of DH2 in Avengers, and I certainly won't get my hopes up. But I'd certainly welcome the idea.

Now, this actually wasn't the only British Marvel cameo of recent times. I wonder how many of you picked up this week's Steve Rogers: Super Soldier #1 by Ed Brubaker and Dale Eaglesham?

And frankly, if you didn't, why not? If there were ever two creators out there I would pick up a book because of...

If you had then you would have been treated to a much larger (and much more an important part of the story) cameo:

Yes, indeed. That is Steve Rogers talking espionage, over a coffee, with none other than Pete Wisdom himself. Now, granted this exchange may only take up 6 pages of the issue, but it's the six pages which set up the entire limited series. An exchange of intel which Wisdom appears to have gone over the heads of the JIC to pass to Rogers. Steve even refers to Wisdom as the 'British Spy Master,' which is pretty much what he is these days.

I also really like the way Eaglesham draws Wisdom, in this issue. The front on pose below being a prime example:

Definite nods to Leonard kirk's styling in Captain Britain & MI13, but very much with his own style in place, to. Great work! I hope we see him again in this story.

But perhaps more importantly, again, is that this shows that Wisdom is on Brubaker's radar. Too often, with regards to these characters (And Captain Britain in particular) I hear people saying 'Yeah, but the big guys at Marvel haven't even heard of these characters'.

Well, here we have Death's Head II spotted in what is arguably Marvel Comics' flagship title, and Pete Wisdom being deliberately chosen by Ed Brubaker. Ed, of course, also writes Secret Avengers. You never know. Maybe it's still possible we might see Captain Britain turn up there. Who knows? But the idea that these characters are simply not known about is a claim which I would definitely refute.

That said of course, we still have no indication of when, or if, Captain Britain WILL be making his Avengers début. Well, let it never be said that I leave any stone unturned. And so a couple of weeks ago I decided to try bother Joe Quesada himself, through Comic Book Resources' Cup O' Joe column (where readers can ask questions to the man himself). Backed up by a few CB&MI13 reading CBR regular posters we finally got our question posed last week.

Although not to Joe Q, himself. But to Marvel's Vice President Executive Editors Tom Brevoort and Axel Alonso - which, to be frank (though not wishing to be disrespectful to Joe Quesada) is every bit as good in my book.

CBR: The Sword Is Drawn was one of a few people asking after Captain Britain's future status, saying "When can we expect to see Brian Braddock's Avengers début? And any idea which book it might occur in?"

Brevoort: Paul Cornell – one of the last few jobs he did before signing his exclusive with DC – was a little two-page "Captain Britain and MI-13" story that ran in "Age of Heroes" in which Steve Rogers extended the invitation to Captain Britain to become part of an Avengers team, massaging the difficulty that might have caused with Pete Wisdom and MI-13. I would think that it's an almost absolute certainty that that's an element that will be followed up on in some tangible way very soon. But again, I don't want to tell you too much.

So, there you go. Not exactly the answer I was after, but it at least seems that there is the intention to take this further, one way or another. Somewhere soon on the horizon, by the sound of it. So don't give up hope, Cap Fans. Keep your eyes peeled.

Who knows? I mean if what I've been reading from Fred Van Lente, on Twitter, is true he's going to be getting an Avengers book soon. I tried quizzing him, but he's not giving away any finite details, yet. There's been rumours flying around the Internet though - everything from a Gods and Magic Avengers, to Cosmic heroes, to a European or even just more International Avengers team. It'll be interesting to see if that one gets revealed at San Diego Comic Con.

Maybe Cap will turn up there? Let's be honest, there is no shortage of Avengers titles for him appear in.

Either way, Tom Brevoort's word is enough for me, for now...

So keep the faith. We've had MI13 turn up in Deadpool Team up, Spitfire is getting a one-shot, Blade is showing up in X-Men, Wisdom in Steve Rogers: Super Soldier. It's all good exposure. These guys certainly aren't being left to be forgotten...

Finally, my apologies for the lack of recent updates. I was struck down with glandular fever a couple of weeks back. It's taken a while to get fit enough to be up and about, let alone get back to blogging. I actually did put together some notes for Knights of Pendragon #1 whilst under the fever. I'm trying to decipher them...

Wish me luck.

Speak soon.

ICFD Cover of the Week - 17th Aug 2008

This week's Cover of the Week we're returning to British shores with this little number from late on in the run of Marvel UK's Brtish published anthology title Overkill.

Overkill #50, from June 1994, is a splendid cover of Death's Head II and Tuck staring out over a field of skulls. It's a collaborative effort between the immense talents of Mr Liam Sharp and Mr Simon Bisley. Now THAT'S a pairing! And it's exactly the kind of reason that I started doing this feature. Overkill had so many great covers and possessed a tone which we certainly felt here in the UK, but I'm not sure translated entirely to American readers. It was grittier over here. Dirtier. But in the most enjoyable sense.

I find myself missing Death's Head and Tuck more and more by the year. I find it hard to believe that Marvel would opt for the reinvented Death's Head 3.0 in favour of this guy. He had so much more to offer. And offer it he would, for the right price...
