Second Captain Britain appearance of 2010 announced

Yup, you saw that right. The team-up I'm sure you never saw coming - Captain Britain and Deadpool.

Deadpool Team-up is one of the seemingly never ending new Deadpool ongoing books. And in May this year the Merc with a Mouth will be visiting the UK.

Here's the solicit:

DEADPOOL TEAM-UP #893

Written by ROB WILLIAMS
Penciled by MATTEO SCALERA
Cover by HUMBERTO RAMOS
Heroic Age Variant by MATTEO SCALERA

TEAM-UP WITH CAPTAIN BRITAIN - Special Relationship

Cor Blimey guv'nor and, indeed, luv a duck. The fabled missing weapons haul of Captain Britain's old enemy Slaymaster has finally been discovered, which sends Deadpool, and every other mercenary with air miles to cash in, to jolly old England in pursuit of a VERY large payday. But Captain Britain isn't just going to let the deadly Slaymaster tech hit the open market. That just wouldn't be cricket.
32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$2.99

And I absolutely LOVE that Humberto Ramos cover (Although, yes, I know... Technically Deadpool is Canadian).

Many of you might be aware that I am a little scathing of explosion of Deadpool titles at the moment. But with this one I cannot complain. For those who are unaware of Slaymaster, he was one of Captain Britain's foes from back in his pre-Excalibur days. He was a killer. An Arab man who prided himself in the art of killing, and saw the near impervious Captain Britain as one hell of a challenge.

He was killed off in the 80s, during Jamie Delano's run on Captain Britain, where Brian ended up smashing his head in with a large rock, shortly after Slaymaster had blinded Psylocke (For those of you who always wondered why Psylocke had mechanical eyes when he first joined the X-Men - well, that's how that began).

In taking the time to acknowledge that little part of past continuity they have won me over. And as with Age of Heroes, all Captain Britain & MI13 fans you MUST pick up this book.

Sales clearly do talk to Marvel. And if the sales of those two issue leap purely through a connection to CB&MI13 it can only be a good thing.

Plus, I think it's safe to say, that this should be a lot of fun. A lot of quite silly, but genuine fun. And as long as you come into reading this one taking the tone from the cover, I'm sure it'll be worth your while.

  1. Two of my favourite characters in one book, sold!

Deadpool Team-Up has had some excellent entries and some not so excellent entries, here's hoping this is one of the former.

Just to say you may know me as Qu1N7 on twitter!

  2. Hi Andy (Or Qu1N7, I suppose).

Yeah, Deadpool can sometimes be a bit of a mixed bag. Wasn't over keen on the Deadpool Thunderbolts crossover during Andy Diggle's run on that book. Not a great match.

But Deadpool on his own, just doing stories for the hell of it, often turns out really well.

He's kinda like the modern day Death's Head. You know that when you see that character turn up the story is going to be a bit mental, but usually in the best possible way.

  3. Cap's in it, I gotta buy it. O Marvel you so smart! YOu get me hooked, you cancel the main series, but you get my money anyway with these teaser one-offs. Booo :[

    Still. Better'n nothing.

  5. It is a really nice cover, isn't it?

The art is by Humberto Ramos, who sadly won't be doing the interior art.

Not the first time that Ramos has been involved with A captain Britain cover, of course. He also did the Villains variant cover for an issue of Captain Britain and MI13, featuring Sat-yr-9 and The Fury.

  6. I actually enjoyed the Deadpool/Thunderbolts crossover, the flirty banter between Deadpool and Black Widow was funny and it was generally well written.

I know what you mean about Deadpool, sometimes the humour can fall flat but as usual it all depends on who's writing him, I don't believe I've read any of Rob Williams stuff but here's hoping he can make the Crimson Comedian funny as opposed to irritating!

  7. I'm OK with no Humberto Ramos inside the book. I liked his work on Impulse but his Marvel output - that I've seen - hasn't been to my taste. The last I saw was on the Clor issues of Initiative, and to me a lot of his faces looked like people transforming into werewolves.

Just a stylistic thing - good luck to Mr R!

  8. Werewolves? Maybe that was why he was such a good fit to Wolverine. ;)

I know what you mean though, Mart.

I liked Ramos when he was sharing art chores, alternating arcs, on Mike Carey's X-Men run. Because he was a good fit for Bachalo, who couldn't deliver every month. It worked, because it was a very deliberate aesthetic for that run.

Wasn't so sure though, when he was working on New X-Men.

Andy, I have to admit I don't know a lot about Rob Williams either. I think that he was responsible for Cla$$war, which received a fair amount of critical acclaim, but I did not read it myself.

I can't say I actively disliked the Deadpool/Thunderbolts crossover, it's just that I didn't think it fitted with Thunderbolts so well. If had all taken place int the pages of Deadpool I'd have had no problem. Might even have picked up those issues for them.

But Diggle had only just started his run on the book. The first brief arc with the new line-up had only just finished, continuing with the dark and twisted feel of Warren Ellis run. We did not know much about the new cast. And so going straight from dark and gritty into comedy really jarred. It broke the flow of the book.

A great shame. Although perhaps not as bad as switch between Diggle's run and Jeff Parker's. It was revealed that the second Black Widow who had been on this team was really the original Black Widow (Natasha Romanov) and she was a plant, put there by Nick Fury.

But in Diggle's final issue Norman Osborn reveals the REAL second Black Widow is there, on ice, and ready to become the new leader of his team.

That was the cliffhanger. And yet, to date, it hasn't been referred to again? Bad continuity there.

  9. Another clear sign that Cap is being given a big push, which I think is some important groundwork for him getting his own series again (solo or team).

Rob Williams' work is excellent - Cla$$war shows he can do serious when required (and is out now in a trade - well worth checking out) but he can also drop some serious comedy, as you can see in his Low Life series (Dirty Frank being a creation of towering comedy genius). He also does a lot of work with licensed properties, so he knows how to play with the toys without breaking them. So I'm pretty happy in that - he should be a safe pair of hands and if all goes well it should be a quality tale.
